Second Modus workshop, ‘‘What could future air-rail multimodal mobility look like?’’, to be held online on 14 February 2022

The SESAR European ‘Modus’ project is exploring the future landscape of air-rail multimodal travel with a range of future scenarios. Following a successful first workshop in 2021, the Modus consortium has decided to hold a second workshop to share and validate the status of the project with experts from the rail and air sectors.

The goal of this second workshop is to discuss ideas from participants on what models need to include in order to be useful to a range of stakeholders. What is Modus doing well, and what is missing?

Modus is a SESAR/H2020 research project and was launched in 2020. Against a background of increasing environmental awareness, regulatory measures, capacity shortages across different modes and the need for a more seamless and hassle-free passenger experience, the future evolution of European travellers’ demand for mobility is still unknown, along with its potential impact on the European transport system. The optimisation and alignment of intermodal transport is therefore of utmost importance for the overall performance of the (future) European transport system, especially when it comes to providing seamless journeys for passengers and mitigating capacity constraints.

The main objective of the project is to analyse the performance of the overall transport system by considering the entire door-to-door journey holistically and assessing the role of air transport with an integrated, intermodal approach. For this purpose, Modus identifies and assesses (future) drivers of passenger mobility demand and supply in terms of their impact on passenger mode choice. This enables the development of multiple scenarios for future mobility paths, taking account of aspects such as new regulatory frameworks to meet new environmental standards or new transport operator business models, covering a timeframe of 2040 onwards.

The workshop will be a lively discussion, featuring two round tables with industry stakeholders and interactive boards for participants. Registration is free but places are limited, so do book your place now.
