The 8th World Congress on High Speed Rail will be held in Philadelphia, USA, on 10-13 July 2012. The congress is being organised by UIC and APTA together with Amtrak, the Association of American Railroads (AAR), the Federal Railroad Administration of the US Department of Transportation (FRA), and VIA Rail Canada – all UIC North American Members.
The Scientific and Organising Committees met on 13 and 14 February. Among the various subjects discussed, 3 points can be highlighted.
2 round tables
High ranking people involved in the development of high speed rail and other transport industries will be invited to debate the major issues regarding the financing of high speed lines and competition between modes. They will address a set of issues which any country presently extending or creating its own system needs to solve. They will also comment on the audience’s poll about transport policy and related matters.
25 parallel sessions
Parallel sessions will deal with both technical and economical issues as well as transport policy visions. Technical sessions will be dedicated to 1 specific subject to be tackled by a set of international experts. During some of the sessions, UIC will disclose its latest research findings. Geographic sessions provide a benchmark of systems implemented worldwide. 3 corridor sessions will aim at delivering information about potential new high speed corridors in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Russia, Poland and Scandinavia.
This speech from one of the world leaders will broaden the perspective of high speed rail through a different approach of transport development and a global vision of society’s trends. The delivery of this testimony is expected to be a momentous event that will impress a new vision upon the future.
