The Finnish Transport Agency is Finland’s national infrastructure manager and is, as such, responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the rail network as well as traffic control. The European Union Agency for Railways has drawn up a European Railway Safety Culture Declaration, which it hopes will make the European Union the world leader in railway safety.

The Finnish Transport Agency’s Director-General Kari Wihlman signed the European Railway Safety Culture Declaration on 27 September. By signing the declaration, the Finnish Transport Agency wants to show that it regards railway safety as one of its key values and is committed to promoting safety in all aspects of its business and management.

“Signing the European Railway Safety Culture Declaration was a self-evident move for the Finnish Transport Agency. We play an important role in ensuring and improving the safety of our railways. The principles of the European Railway Safety Culture Declaration will also be incorporated into our management and safety management policies”, said Director-General Wihlman.

The Finnish Transport Agency is also asking its partners and suppliers to commit to the principles of the European Railway Safety Culture Declaration. “Ensuring the safety of our railways is a responsibility shared by all rail transport operators.”
