This was the second of three major milestones workshops in Russia, India and South Africa. A pioneer project of this type in the rail sector and fully funded by the 6th Framework program of the European Commission it was attended by the key players from the European Research Area, members of the Technology Platform for the Rail sector - ERRAC (European Rail Research Advisory Council), namely the European rail operators and infra-structure managers represented by the UIC (Maria Lafont and Dennis Schut), the railway manufacturing supply industry represented by the UNIFE (Giorgio Travaini), and the academia represented by Professor Manuel Pereira of the Technical University of Lisbon (IST) and Vice Chairman of ERRAC and their Indian counterparts.

The major objectives of the project are to disseminate the results of selected projects carried out within the 5th and 6th European RTD Framework Programmes and to learn from similar projects of the international partners and to identify future needs and priorities for joint international rail research projects, with a particular focus on the participation within the 7th European RTD Framework Programme. Also an database of rail researchers and institutes is being set up for this purpose.

The 2nd Global View Workshop started on March 26. The programme included a Technical Visit to the RDSO Research Centre.
