RESTRAIL is a research project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development in the field of transport, published on 20 July 2010.

According to European Rail Agency data, suicides represent 62 % of victims, which together with trespass (unauthorised access to rail property), constitute 83 % of deaths that take place on the railway system. This fact is a growing cause of concern, especially in Europe. In this context, RESTRAIL aims to reduce the occurrence of suicides and trespass on railway property and the costly service disruption these events cause, by providing the rail industry with an analysis and identification of cost-effective prevention and mitigation measures.
RESTRAIL, led by the UIC Security Division, started on 1 October 2011 for a duration of 36 months.

The kick-off meeting will take place at UIC HQ on 8 November 2011 with the representatives of 17 partners from 12 different countries (Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom).

Seven UIC members are involved in the consortium (DBAG, FFE, IK, INFRABEL, PRORAIL, TCDD and TRAFIKVERKET), as well as research centres and universities (VTT, CIDAUT, IFSTTAR, HMGU, KAU, UNott) and manufacturers (ASTS, MTRS3, NICE).

The project also has a large Advisory Group: SNCF, NETWORK RAIL, RAILPOL, University of Quebec, American Association of Suicidology, MOSTRA (communication agency), PTFE (Spanish railway technology platform), OSPI project, HIT, Madrid metro, and the Spanish General Directorate of Traffic, etc.
