Russian Railways encourages car drivers to be vigilant and strictly observe the highway code at level crossings!

During the first six months of 2016, 95 traffic accidents occurred at level crossings operated by Russian Railways.
The largest number of accidents occurred at North Caucasus (12 incidents), Gorky (11 incidents), October (10 incidents) and Kuibyshev Railways (10 incidents).
As a result of accidents, 50 people were injured, 17 of them fatally.

By way of comparison, in the first six months of 2015, 129 accidents occurred on the railway network, which injured 129 people, 30 of them fatally.
The main reasons for the accidents were traffic violations by drivers, including driving on to level crossings despite warning stop signs from the automatic alarm and signalling system and closed barriers, or vehicles breakdowns leading to collision with a passing train.

In order to prevent such traffic accidents, Russian Railways is modernising level crossings and equipping them with modern warning and protective devices.
By the end of 2016, it is planned to spend over 300 million roubles on improving the technical condition of level crossings and introducing safety devices.
In addition, Russian Railways is cooperating closely with regional administrations and carrying out major work to reduce the number of road and railway crossings at the same level. Currently, work is underway on ten such crossings.
