Správa železniční dopravní cesty has completed an extensive reconstruction of the roofing at Praha hlavní nádraží (Prague Main Station) which is one of the most important railway junctions in the Czech Republic. Besides repairing a historical monument, the main project’s objective was also increasing safety and comfort for passengers.

The steel two-aisled hall is an integral part of the Prague main station building complex listed as a monument under protection. Its arch construction extends over platforms No 1 - 4. Works included reconstruction of the hall dewatering, reconstruction and completion of footbridges including the railing, new fenestration of skylights, side walls and hall fronts as well as the roofing of Fanta Building. Anti-corrosion protection of the bearing construction was renewed, roof cladding was replaced by a new one, joints were scrutinised and damaged rivets were replaced.
The project was implemented in several phases in various parts of the hall. The architectonical design was elaborated based on documents resulting from the previous project named “Modernisation of Praha-hlavní nádraží, Western Part, Part 2, Platforms I-IV. The basic idea was preparing a modern single concept that would provide a common architectonical shape to the whole spacious area of the Prague main station.

”As far as organisation is concerned, the most difficult was coordinating all construction works with maintaining operation of the railway station for the whole time of reconstruction. I believe that passengers will forgive us a temporary discomfort as the result is worth it. Thanks to the project’s implementation, the Prague main station building acquired a dignified and representative shape. We were also able to provide higher safety and comfort for passengers“, said Mr Mojmír Nejezchleb, Deputy Director General of SŽDC for Infrastructure Modernisation.

The supplier of the construction designated as Reconstruction of hall roofing of Station Praha-Hlavní nádraží, Phase II were the companies Metrostav and PROMINECON CZ. This is a phased project while Phase I was co-financed from Operational Programme Transport (OPT) within the programme period 2007-2013 and Phase II was approved for co-financing from OPT within the programme period 2014-2020.

Total investment costs of Phase II equalled CZK 386,150,942 (VAT excluded). The planned EU contribution from the Cohesion Fund for Phase II amounted to CZK 261,920,823.
