Czech Republic: Direct rail service launched between Prague and Harrachov

On 14 April 2018, the Prague-Harrachov direct train connection was launched. Two pairs of trains will run on weekends directly between Prague and Harrachov.

Harrachov is an important mountain resort in the Krkonoše, the Czech Republic’s highest mountain range. Trains are operated by modernised 854.2 series railcars, which are allowed to run on the last part of the route between Tanvald and Harrachov.

This section is very steep (gradient is up to 58%) and was originally built in 1902 as a cog railway. For this reason, only some vehicles with special approval can run on this track.
