The Training Centre of the National Office of Railways of Morocco (ONCF) of Rabat is hosting the 7th edition of the training on Railway Safety from 10 – 21 June 2019. Participants include 30 managers from African railways including UIC and non-UIC members from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Gabon, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Tunisia and the hosting country Morocco. The rich and diversified programme, includes theoretical courses, supported by case studies led by Moroccan experts, as well as conferences and targeted technical visits to railway sites across the Moroccan Rail Network.

As part of the deployment of the (UIC) - Africa Region 2019 action plan, this training follows the new strategy “Revitalisation of Rail in Africa: Destination 2040” agreed and aimed for by the African Transport Ministers.

The UIC Africa Region continues to increase initiatives to share experiences and know-how between African networks, in order to give new impulse and reinvigorate cooperation in the various railway fields. In the last five years, this cooperation has focused among other things on:

  • Organisation of 14 conferences/seminars on current and targeted topics, involving 170 experts and the participation of about 2000 African leaders and decision-makers;
  • The completion of 10 training courses, focusing on safety and railway safety as well as track maintenance, for the benefit of nearly 240 participants supervised by 120 ONCF experts;
  • The organisation of about thirty information and good practice sharing visits for the benefit of the various African delegations;
  • The completion of two prospective studies.

Through these kinds of concrete actions, the objective is to support African Railway Networks in their upgrading and development processes and, consequently, to contribute to the development of the African Rail Transport System.
