2026: a strategic year for FRMCS
2026 will be a pivotal year for FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System), marked by major milestones for the railway sector:
- Delivery of the UIC FRMCS V3p Specifications (November 2026)
- Large-scale testing of the FRMCS V2.2 specification set within FP2 MORANE 2, a EU RAIL co-funded project coordinated by UIC, bringing together 16 European railways, 13 product manufacturers, UNIFE, and two Mobile Network Operators
- Expansion of FRMCS initiatives beyond Europe, reflecting the growing global momentum behind next-generation railway communications
As the next major step change in railway telecoms, FRMCS will be a key driver of railways digitalisation, supporting enhanced operational safety, improving punctuality, capacity.
By enabling the transition towards the digital train, FRMCS will also contribute to improved traffic management, network optimisation, and overall rail performance.
