Biography

Vladimir Ivanovich Yakunin
President of JSC «Russian Railways»

Vladimir Yakunin was born in June 30, 1948 in Melenki town, the Vladimir Region. In 1972 he graduated from the Leningrad Mechanical Institute. He started working as a junior research fellow in the State Institute for Applied Chemistry. After completing his military service in the Soviet Army, he worked as an engineer, then a senior engineer in the State Committee for International Trade of the Council of Ministers (Sovmin) of the Soviet Union, and later became the head of department at the Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
He is married and has two sons.

Activities of Vladimir Yakunin

Between 1985 and 1991 Yakunin was in the service of the Soviet diplomatic mission to the United Nations – first as the Second Secretary and then as the Mission’s First Secretary.

Then he became the Chairman of the board of CJSC International Center for Business Cooperation, director of the North-Western district inspection of the Main accountability office of the President of the Russian Federation.
Since October 2000 Yakunin was deputy of the Russia’s Transport Minister.
In February 2002 he was appointed the first deputy of the Russian Minister of Railways.

Since October 2003 he became First vice-president of JSC «Russian Railways».
On June 14, 2005 he was appointed to the position of the president of JSC «Russian Railways».

Vladimir Yakunin is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Center of The National Glory of Russia and St. Andrew’s Foundation organisations.
He is also president and founder of the World public forum «Dialogue of civilizations».

Co-president of the «Franco-Russian dialogue» association.
Scientific supervisor and chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Governance and problem analysis center (www.rusrand.ru).
Head of State policy department of the Faculty of Political Science at the Moscow State University, named after M.Lomonosov.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the children charity fund «Rasprav krylia».

Member of the Board of Trustees of the «Russkiy Mir» Foundation.
Member of the Board of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

Chairman of Commission on transport and transport infrastructure.
Doctor of Political Science. Visiting professor of the Stockholm School of Economics.

Honours and awards of Vladimir Yakunin

Awarded: Orders of Honour, Order for Merit to the Fatherland - 4th class, Medals for Battle Merit and For the Development of Railways.
Orders of the Russian Orthodox Church: Order of St. Vladimir – 2 class, Order of St. Seraphim of Sarov – 2 class, Order of St. Andrei Rublev – 1st class; Order of the al-Fahr – 1st class (Council of Muftis of Russia). For his outstanding contribution to the dialogue of civilizations and peoples and the Pan-Orthodox prayer «Pray for the peace of Jerusalem» he was awarded the Order of the Holy Sepulcher (Orthodox Church of Jerusalem).

Awarded French National Order of the Legion of Honour, Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria, the Order of Friendship of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic – as the Grand Officer.
Decoration for Honoured Railwayman of JSC «Russian Railways».
International Award of St. Andrew «Faith and Loyalty» - awarded in 2000 for its contribution to the Russian nation-building and active participation in the project of creation of the Center for Russian National Glory.
La Renaissance Française Gold Medal – June 25, 2012 for the contribution to the development of Russian-French relations.
Awarded Order of Civil Merit of the Kingdom of Spain – the Grand Cross,
Globalisation for the Common Good Initiative (GCGI, British organisation) Award for Public Service in the Interests of the Common Good.
