Head of Safety unit

The International union of railways (UIC) is looking for a Head of Safety unit in Paris.

The UIC is a world-wide organisation for international cooperation among railways and promotion of rail transport.

Safety activities are of strategic importance to UIC members and are growing importance for railways all over the world.

The new Head of unit will coordinate the work of the Safety unit team and directly report to the management and the members of UIC.

Main mission

The new Head of unit will coordinate the UIC Safety unit activities:

  • Leading of the preparation and the execution of the UIC Safety Platform Plenary and Steering Group meetings in contact with the Chairman of the UIC Safety Platform
  • Influence the efficient use of the staff in the UIC Safety Unit
  • Ensure the economical use of the approved budget


  • Support to the working parties of the Safety platform
    • System Safety Management Group (SSMG)
    • Safety Performance Group (SPG)/ Safety Database
    • Human Factors WG
    • Occupational Health & Safety Group (OHSG)
    • International Rail Safety Network (IRSN)
    • European Level Crossing Forum (ELCF)
  • Develop the contacts with other institutions/organisations (CER, EIM, Agency, ILGGRI, ERA) on safety related issues;
  • Develop guidelines and best practices for implementations of SMS
  • Support of the UIC coordination activity in the field of safety at level crossings
  • Consultation on safety relevant aspects with the technical departments in the UIC HQs
  • Member of the Steering Committee of the “International Railway Safety Council” (IRSC)
  • To give presentations about UIC Safety activities at international seminars and workshops in the various regions
  • To share competences in safety and conclusions of work of the working groups at different seminar, workshop…

Director of Fundamental Values Department

Required knowledge and skills

  • Long term experience of work in railway safety
  • Expertise on safety aspects in the railway system
  • Good mastering of European legislation of the railway’s safety
  • Good knowledge of the French and English language, basic in one or other UIC members language is a plus
  • Excellent management competences
  • High ability and experience in coordinating teams and managing projects, preferably in an intercultural work environment,
  • Ability to work in an international context (intercultural skills) and in multidisciplinary teams
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Leadership
  • Good written and oral communication
  • Creativity
  • Experience in the field of international relations
  • Excellent competences in Microsoft office products
