Multimodal transport is an important component of the transport system. The development of multimodal transport requires coordination of the work of various modes of transport and their integration into a single organizational system, functioning on the basis of the formation of logistics and terminal centers, unified documents, procedures, integration of electronic systems, etc. Increasing the reliability of transport services, reducing the cost and time of delivery of goods are achieved through the integration of different modes of transport, the elimination of cargo delays at transshipment points, the management of the entire process of cargo delivery from the warehouse of the consignor to the warehouse of the consignee using the latest computer technology.

In 2019 within the UIC APRA the work on the project “Measures for the effective development of multimodal transport in the Asia-Pacific Region aimed at increasing the competitiveness of the railway transport” (INTERTRAN-II) is underway. This project is being implemented in close cooperation with UNESCAP and builds upon the UNESCAP study developed in this field. The result of the Phase II will be a pilot multimodal transportation along the route ‘Yokohama seaport (Japan) – Silikatnaya railway station (Russia)’ using the new information technology for electronic exchange between the transportation process participants, including the shipper, sea line, port, railway carrier and customs authorities.

Within the Phase III of the Project based on the Phase II it is planned in 2020 to extend the above mentioned pilot multimodal transportations to Central, Western and Nothern Europe destinations or to destinations in EAEU member states. The project will increase the attractiveness of cross-cutting multimodal services with rail component for shippers and forwarders.
