Background and Motivation

Looking at the high political and public pressure on the use of Glyphosate, the expiration of the Glyphosate license at EU level in December 2022 and the high probability of a Glyphosate phase-out, a transition strategy from chemical herbicide-based to integrated vegetation management has to be developed now in order to prepare the railways for the future.

The transition from chemical herbicide-based to integrated vegetation management with special focus on the railway track area constitutes a great challenge for the railways, since

  • 1) Chemical herbicide-based methods – with Glyphosate as the most important active substance – are today the most widely used and cost efficient as well as the most effective methods of vegetation control.
  • 2) All promising alternative methods of vegetation control - based on hot water, wet steam, organic acids and electro weeding - are currently not yet
    • fully matured technologically and thus require dedicated research and development efforts and further professionalization
    • adapted to the special needs and requirements of the railway sector
    • officially registered and approved for application in the railway sector
    • as cost efficient as methods based on conventional herbicides by far.

The objectives of this project are to:

  1. Develop a global strategy for the transition from chemical herbicide-based to integrated vegetation control for railway track area
  2. Facilitate and boost information and knowledge exchange (e.g. by standardized documentation) between railways on all aspects of integrated vegetation control with special focus on investigations and experiences with alternative methods of vegetation control for the railway track area including the regulatory constraints.
  3. Improve and expand the technology monitoring and assessment approach developed within the framework of the Herbie project with special attention to the acquisition of reliable data for the economic and operational performance of alternative methods for vegetation control
  4. Collect best practices and strategies for supporting integrated vegetation management approaches by IT tools and solutions
  5. Explore funding options (on national and EU level) for collaborative efforts of the railways regarding the adaptation of alternative methods of vegetation control to railway requirements.
