Digital technologies underpin new paradigms in innovation and competitiveness across a broad range of market sectors. It is therefore necessary to identify the main digital potential fields and key enabling technologies which could result to quick and high benefits for the railways sector.
All fields of the digital sector should be investigated taking in consideration their applicability in the global railway system. The project will focus on the digital technologies which could lead of quick wins for the railway business.
This project provides the opportunity to develop a common approach for the benefit and interest of the Rail community by identifying:

  • risks and opportunities analysis of the application of digital promising technologies in the railway sector
  • Priorities and recommendations for the implementation of digital technologies
  • potential partnerships with high level center of competence developing digital enabling technologies

DIGIM Programme

DIGital IMpacts on business processes is a transverse and a worldwide programme in UIC to use the new digital technologies to support the development of business processes, to improve safety and security in railway, to optimise the operations and to better use the existing data.


The program initiated by UIC and 6 members were involved: ViaRail, RZD, RAI, FS, RSSB, CFL
3 projects were defined in this programme:

  • Core-Project : Digital impact on Business Processes
  • Clear Station
  • Connected level crossing (phase 1)

A survey was done among members of DIGIM programme with the aim to collect of all initiatives and requirements necessary for the selection of most relevant digital enabling technologies that could easily be developed and lead to quick wins for the Railway sector. The result consists of:

  • Digital impact on Business Processes, pros and cons
  • Digitalization in railways and pre-requisites for digitalization
  • Fields of development considering DIGIM Project
  • Quick wins for the Railway sector and technologies to use
    The next phase of survey will be lunched among all UIC members.

Clear Station
Providing assistance to blind passengers inside station:

  • To provide accessibility for all users
  • To enhance customer experience

Phone application for indoor navigation

  • An application based on Bluetooth beacons successfully developed, tested and implemented in Ottawa station
  • It has adapted interface to give the person the information he needs and to locate the person inside the station

Connected level crossing

  • Optimize the closing time of the barrier at level crossing by considering the speed of train
  • An application(software) has been developed to compare theoretical train time-table and real time information based on GPS to determine the optimize time of closure at level crossing. The application is designed and tested in Canada.
