Standardisation timeline

Standardisation, UIC’s core mission from the beginning...

And now with the IRS, a resolutely forward-looking instrument to continue international cooperation among railways and partners.

Since the creation of the International Union of Railways in 1922, technical harmonisation has been and is at the heart of UIC’s missions.

The timeline provides a link between UIC’s historical vocation and the current publication of UIC IRSs.

It includes historical facts and milestones in the construction of the railway system, major railway achievements in the 20th century, products and entities created by UIC enabling technical harmonisation.

One of the forthcoming milestones is 2022; until this date, UIC will continue to work actively on the development of the IRS.

To be continued …
