The Research and Innovation Sector coordinates cooperation among railway organisations, universities, research centres, and industrial partners, focusing on research that can be beneficial for UIC members. The International Railway Research Board (IRRB) promotes cooperation across regions and Regional Competence Hubs worldwide. In Europe, the Research and Innovation Coordination Group (RICG) helps align members' priorities and contributions to joint research programmes, including Europe's Rail and future research partnerships.
It also works closely with Talent and Expertise Development to bridge the gap between expertise and technological progress. Current and proposed initiatives address longer-term railway needs through Rail Vision 2035, human-centred digitalisation and sustainability through Rail 5.0, and the preservation and transfer of operational knowledge through Rail Skills & Wisdom and related work.
The aim is to convert shared research into practical guidance, cooperation projects, transferable knowledge and, ultimately, operational improvements and new skills for the railway workforce.
