Telecom and Signalling provides the foundations for safe and reliable railway communications and control. It coordinates the development of Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), the successor to the Global System for Mobile communications - Railways (GSM-R), and related standardisation and validation activities. It also maintains current GSM-R services and specifications, supports the evolution of existing signalling standards, and develops interoperable data sharing for Driver Advisory Systems (DAS).
Digital Applications addresses the fragmentation of railway data and models. Through the Rail System Model (RSM) and OntoRail, the sector is working on a federated architecture intended to enable the interoperability of independently developed railway models without imposing a single replacement model. It also advances practical applications for energy data sharing, digital twins, and artificial intelligence. It also leads UIC's progressive initiative to introduce AI into its own professional work, while ensuring that expertise, reliability, and human oversight remain central.
Research and Innovation brings together UIC members, research organisations, and industry partners at European and global level. Together with the Talent and Expertise Development Platform, it seeks to apply research results, preserve and share railway knowledge, and develop the skills required for future systems.
By building bridges between experimentation, standardisation, digital interoperability and people, the department helps members address immediate operational challenges while preparing a more connected, resilient, and sustainable railway system.
