After two years of online activity, the UIC is delighted to be able to host the Modus Project Final results Conference in-person, at UIC HQ in Paris on 25 October 2022.

Since 2020 the SESAR European ‘Modus project has been exploring what the future of air-rail multimodal travel may look like via a range of scenarios. After two online workshops and intense research we are now delighted to share the results from this multidisciplinary group of air and rail experts and academics.

Modus is a SESAR/H2020 research project launched in 2020. Against a background of increasing environmental awareness, regulatory measures, capacity shortages across different modes of transport, and the need for a more seamless and hassle-free passenger experience, how European travellers’ demand for mobility may develop in the future, along with its potential impact on the European transport, is still unknown. Optimising and aligning intermodal transport is therefore of the utmost importance for the overall performance of the (future) European transport system, especially when it comes to providing seamless journeys for passengers and mitigating capacity constraints.

The main objective of the project is to analyse the performance of the transport system in general, by considering the entire door-to-door journey as a whole and assessing the role of air transport with an integrated, intermodal approach. For this purpose, Modus identifies and assesses what will drive passenger mobility demand and supply in terms of their impact on passenger transport choices. This enables multiple scenarios for future mobility pathways to be mapped, taking aspects such as new regulatory frameworks to meet new environmental standards or new transport operator business models, into account, covering a timeframe of 2040 onwards.

The workshop will also allow a lively discussion with members of the consortium, industry stakeholders and participants.
