On 9–10 April 2025, the 53rd UIC Accessibility Group of Experts (PASSAGE) meeting took place in Paris. PASSAGE is a long-standing group that has existed for over a decade, holding three meetings each year with members from more than 30 different companies. This was the first meeting of 2025.

The event opened with a warm welcome from the chair, Paola Negri from Trenitalia, followed by a presentation from the hosts – colleagues from the French National Railways (SNCF) – who introduced the upcoming TGV M high-speed trains, scheduled to enter service in 2026. Developed in partnership with Alstom, these new-generation trains are designed with a strong focus on both comfort and accessibility. A key improvement is the increased space for passengers, with an additional five centimetres of legroom due to wider spacing between seats.

Accessibility has been an important focus for the TGV M, with it being developed in close consultation with several disability organisations. The trains will feature autonomous boarding using a self-activated round lift, and a dedicated accessible carriage equipped with an extra-large accessible toilet. This carriage will accommodate up to five wheelchair users, with three fixed wheelchair spaces and two convertible seats for passengers who can transfer from their wheelchairs. In addition, six seats will be available for accompanying persons, who can travel with wheelchair users at a special fare.

During the round table, the PASSAGE members shared recent accessibility updates from their respective companies, with several key topics also being introduced. One focused on accessibility and assistance during major events, with SNCF presenting their experience in preparation for the 2024 Olympics, and Trenitalia sharing their plans for the Jubilee 2025. Another topic addressed the needs of neurodiverse passengers, as well as those with hidden disabilities. As an example of this, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) presented their ongoing work with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme.

During the technical visit, the PASSAGE members had the opportunity to see the new TGV M firsthand. They were also shown how assistance is organised at Gare de l’Est in Paris, including a discussion on a pilot project to create a silent, safe space at the station for people suffering from sensory overload.

In addition, the Guide Project App was demonstrated. Currently being piloted on selected SNCF trains, the app is designed to assist passengers with visual impairments by helping them navigate the train and locate their assigned carriage and seat.

The PASSAGE meeting underscored the general ongoing commitment to advancing rail accessibility and mobility for all, reflecting dedication to fostering a more inclusive and accessible future in rail transport.

The next PASSAGE meeting is scheduled to take place in Bratislava, hosted by the Railway Company of Slovakia (ZSSK) in June 2025.
