On 11 June 2021, a new return Eurocity rail service from Vienna to Trieste, via Ljubljana, was launched. This new direct connection, which is available to passengers every day, represents a significant shift towards sustainable mobility for Austrian and Slovenian Railways, together with the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

The train connects not only the residents of the neighbouring railways but also the three countries. Passengers from all three directions are now able to travel directly, without changing trains, from Austria to Slovenia or Italy, and vice versa.

The line can be also used as a starting point for connecting journeys. From Trieste, passengers can take Freccarossa high-speed trains to continue their journey to Venice, Padua, Milan, Turin, Bologna, Florence or Rome. And from Vienna, passengers can travel on to Berlin, Bratislava, Krakow, Warsaw and other destinations. Not forgetting the option to take your bike on the train!

The service departs from Vienna at 07:58 and Graz at 10:39, and arrives in Maribor at 11:37, Ljubljana at 13:57 and Trieste Centrale at 16:52. The return service leaves Trieste Centrale at 13:03, and arrives in Ljubljana at 15:42, Maribor at 18:12, Graz at 19:20 and Vienna at 22:02.

Austrian and Slovenian Railways have also prepared a wide range of favourable price offers for travel from Austria or Slovenia to Trieste. Thanks to these low-price offers, passengers from Vienna, Graz, Maribor, Celje or Ljubljana can easily travel to Trieste or vice versa.

The train’s maiden journey was symbolically accompanied by management representatives from Slovenian Railways, Austrian Railways and the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
