UIC, as a member of the European PhDs EU-Rail consortium, is supporting the dissemination of a new survey conducted by the University of Malaga, Spain, as part of the doctoral research project “Change Making for Gender Equality in Rail”.
The study aims to better understand the experiences of women in the railway sector – both as professionals and as users of rail transport – in order to identify areas for improvement and inform measures that promote greater gender equality across the sector.
This initiative closely aligns with UIC’s ongoing commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion and gender equality in rail. Through its Train2BEqual opt-in project, let by the Italian State Railways (FS), Italian Railway Network (RFI), Catalan Government Railways (FGC) and Infrabel, UIC worked with members and partners worldwide to share knowledge, raise awareness, and support the development of more inclusive spaces and services across the railway ecosystem. These efforts contribute to building a sector that better reflects the diversity of and serves its workforce and passengers.
Evidence-based research plays a key role in supporting this transformation. The results of this survey will help strengthen knowledge on gender-related challenges and opportunities in rail and contribute to shaping future actions and policies across the industry.
While the survey focuses on women’s experiences, participation is open to all individuals, regardless of gender.
Participation is voluntary, responses are anonymous and confidential, and the questionnaire takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.
UIC invites railway companies, transport organisations, and sector stakeholders to participate and share the survey within their networks.

Thank you in advance for contributing to research that supports a more inclusive and equitable railway sector.
