On 10 and 11 February 2026, the CBRNe4rail consortium met in Malmö, Sweden, for a combined workshop and study visit, gathering project partners and Advisory Board members.
Representatives from a broad range of organisations attended, including rail operators, security services, public authorities and technical experts from Deutsche Bahn AG, ENEA, Ertzaintza, Fondazione SAFE, FS, Grosuplje Municipality, Jernhusen AB, London Fire Brigade, NBC School, PKP S.A., Swedish Civil Defense, Trafikverket, UIC and the University of Łódź, reflecting the strong multidisciplinary dimension of the project.
The workshop on 10 February opened with presentations from the University of Łódź on the results of the European railway CBRNe preparedness survey and the outcomes of a review of past EU-funded CBRNe projects, providing insights into current capabilities across EU rail operators and highlighting transferable lessons. UniLodz also summarised the consolidated findings of the study visits previously conducted in Poland, Italy, Spain and Slovenia.
Later, Fondazione SAFE introduced a set of virtual reality (VR) scenario examples, illustrating how immersive technologies can support the future training curriculum of the project by enabling more realistic, operationally relevant CBRNe simulations for the rail sector.
The afternoon was dedicated to applied work. A hands on session on vulnerability assessment and risk analysis for critical infrastructures proved to be one of the most engaging elements of the workshop. These structured exchanges generated substantial input for future scenario development and operational guidance.
The study visit was then held on 11 February. The consortium first engaged in an interview session with Malmö railway station management, security personnel and administrative staff, supported by Jernhusen and Trafikverket. The event concluded with a guided tour of Malmö station, enabling participants to examine the infrastructure firsthand and identify key areas relevant to CBRNe resilience planning.
The Malmö workshop and study visit represent an important milestone for the project and helped strengthened the bridge between research, operational insights and capability development across the European railway community.
