On 23 September 2025, the Door-to-Door (D2D) Multimodal Working Group Meeting took place in Rome, hosted by Italian State Railways (FS) Technology.

Luca Mariorenzi, Chair of the UIC Sales and Distribution Passenger Expert Subgroup, and David Sarfatti, Chair of the UIC Multimodal Working Group, opened the meeting and welcomed over 40 participants, attending either in person or online. The attendees represented Trenitalia, FSTechnology, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), National Railways of France (SNCF), Spanish National Railway Network (RENFE), Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), FS, Entur, Dutch Railways (NS), Busitalia, SNCB, Aachener Verkehrsverbund, Arriva, Hit Rail, Trenord, Almaviva, FS International, Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), Smart Ticketing Alliance, Calypsonet, German Railways (DB), Samtrafiken, Région Grand Est, TAP TSI Services Governance Association (TSGA), CET4biz, Iryo, EY and UIC.

Following a brief round of introductions, Sarfatti provided an overview of the Multimodal Working Group and the Door-to-Door (D2D) workstream. The MWG D2D workstream is an open forum aiming to collaboratively advance sustainable multimodal mobility. lt welcomes the participation of public transport operators, public transport authorities, industry associations, mobility service providers, technology providers, and any other multimodal door-to-door mobility stakeholders.

Stefano Scarci, EY, presented the Open Multi-modal Toolkit (OMMT), developed by UIC to support integration across different modes of transport. OMMT is a modular framework that builds on existing rail standards to reduce technical barriers and enable scalable, multimodal services. More information can be found at: https://uic.org/passenger/passenger-services-group/ommt.

Subsequent presentations showcased real-world implementation examples of key OMMT components.

Johan Hammar, Samtrafiken, gave an overview of the Sweden National Distribution System, which, since June 2024, has used a distributed architecture relying on UIC Open Sales and Distribution Model (OSDM) APIs. OSDM is the core component of OMMT.Book.

Aurélien Geiss, Région Grand Est, described the France Région Grand Est Interoperable 2D-Barcode Platform, which enables secure, interoperable ticketing across multiple local networks. The platform makes use of the UIC Flexible Content Barcode (FCB) and UIC Public Key Management Website (PKMW), the essential elements of OMMT.Move.

Bob Vinke, NS, delivered a presentation on managing the e-ticket lifecycle through real-time data sharing in the Netherlands. He explained how the UIC electronic Ticket Control Database (eTCD) platform improves ticketing by enabling real-time sharing of ticket status and control data, addressing issues like fraud and refund abuse. eTCD is the core component of OMMT.Sync.

Mariorenzi, representing TSGA, and Seid Maglajlic, CET4Biz, presented the Location API developed by TSGA. This OSDM-compliant API provides UIC location codes in URN format, alternative IDs, various intermodal identifiers, geo-coordinates, and additional identifiers when queried using either a location name or coordinates. This service supports journey planning and booking and is an integral part of OMMT.Plan.

The presentations sparked an engaging discussion among participants, covering challenges in enabling multimodal solutions, lessons learned from successful implementations, security and performance considerations, and factors that could encourage the adoption of common industry standards.

The next D2D meeting is scheduled to take place online on 19 November. It will feature a roundtable discussion aimed at gathering participant feedback to help shape the future of OMMT.
