The 1 May 2023 marked a revolution in fares for German public transport. The Deutschland-Ticket, which costs 49 euros per month, is a digital, nationwide ticket with which passengers can use regional trains, buses, and trams throughout the country.
So far, via the Deutsche Bahn sales channels alone, around 1.3 million Deutschland-Tickets have already been sold. The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) predicts that around eleven million regular customers to switch from their current season tickets to the cheaper Deutschland-Ticket.
In addition, according to VDV estimates, five to six million entirely new subscribers will decide in favour of buying a Deutschland-Ticket.
Federal Transport Minister Dr. Volker Wissing said "From 1 May onwards, travelling with public transport will be easier than ever. The Deutschland-Ticket is the biggest fare revolution in local public transport to date and a real step forward for our country. We are helping citizens by reducing the barriers to access climate-friendly public transport and are paving the way for more modern, digitalised, and connected public mobility.”
