Mr Volodymyr Zhmak was appointed to the position of Chairman of the Management Board of JSC Ukrainian railways on 26 August 2020.
Background
Volodymyr Zhmak was born on 16 March 1964 in Chornobyl. He is married, has four children.
In 1990, Volodymyr graduated from the Faculty of International Relations and International Law of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
Volodymyr also studied at the Institute of European Studies (Italy), at the Business School of the International Institute for Management Development IMD (Switzerland), and received a diploma from Gubkin State University of Oil and Gas (Russia).
Volodymyr Zhmak began his professional career in 1988 as a legal adviser to “Law Firm “Jurvneshservice”, and in 1991 he founded his own law firm, which was active until recently and was in the top 50 ranking of the best law firms in Ukraine.
In parallel with his legal practice, in 1997 Volodymyr became a member of the Supervisory Board of PrJSC “Kyivstar”, where he had been working as an advisor to the President from 2005 to 2010. While working at PrJSC “Kyivstar”, Mr Zhmak dealt with a wide range of issues: from day-to-day operational activities to ensure cross-functional coordination of the company’s functions and divisions to strategic planning and business development. At the same time, Volodymyr was responsible for organising the regulatory and legal activities (legal, regulatory and security areas), headed the anti-crisis committee and the real estate committee, and was Kyivstar’s compliance manager.
In 2010 – 2011, Volodymyr worked as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of PrJSC “ITT-Plaza”.
From 2011 – 2015, Mr Zhmak held senior positions (executive director, president) in Ukrainian companies of the TNK-BP Group (a joint venture of TNK and British Petroleum), which at that time was included in the list of 10 largest private oil companies in the world in terms of oil production. While working in those companies, Volodymyr ensured a high level of their economic success, implemented the compliance rules and guaranteed the business continuity during the acquisition and transformation of the company into EFI “RN-Ukraine”.
In 2015 – 2016 Volodymyr worked as the First Deputy Head of the Odesa Regional State Administration.
In 2017, Mr Zhmak joined the Eastern Consulting Group, and since June 2019, Volodymyr is an independent member of the Supervisory Board of SE “Boryspil International Airport”. It was during this time that business development and operational management projects were implemented, thanks to which SE “Boryspil International Airport” significantly increased its performance.
In March 2020, Volodymyr decided to participate in the competition for the position of Chairman of the Management Board of JSC “Ukrainian railways”, which he successfully passed.
During the meeting on 26 August 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine appointed Volodymyr Zhmak to the position of Chairman of the Management Board of JSC “Ukrainian railways”.
