Promotion of interoperability and creation of new world standards for railways remain at the heart of the UIC activities.

A workshop, presenting the new UIC Leaflet 612 (“Operator specifications for future Rolling Stock”), will take place at UIC HQ in Paris on 3rd of April 2009, from 09h00 to 14h00. This UIC Leaflet is based on the Operators Requirements Specifications (ORS) developed within the MODTRAIN project.

Bringing together around thirty stakeholders concerned with the definition of standards on traction and braking, this workshop is the opportunity for the Railway Undertakings to share a common definition and to achieve a further step towards interoperability.

The European Railway Agency will additionally present the ERA ETCS DMI specification for version base line 3 (next version 3.0.0).

The UIC Leaflet 612 is divided into three parts:

UIC 612 – 0: Functional and System Requirements (FRS) associated with harmonised Driver-Machine-Interfaces (DMI)

Provides the location and precise functional requirements for each operatingand displaying element – not only on the driver‘s desk, but for all MMI (Man-Machine Interface) in- and outside of the traction unit. It is the “lead document” for operation of traction units.

UIC 612 – 1: Operational configurations and Driver’s procedures

- Operational configuration and activated functions ("use cases")
- Transition requirements to change the configuration of the rolling stock
- Driver’s procedures to configure the rolling stock for operational purpose

UIC 612 – 2: Requirements for integration of rolling stock in the European railway system and in Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety (RAMS):

- Requirements allocated to each sub-system of rolling stock
- Requirements for economical purpose
- Requirements for integration of rolling stock in the European railway system

Annexes are planned to be issued in the coming year.
