The emission network met on the 27 and 28 of April in Biel (Switzerland) dedicated to an update on the on going projects and the preparation of 2010 budget. This has been followed by a one day Workshop dedicated to particle filters in diesel locomotives.
A technical visit of the SBB workshop in Biel allowed the participants a hands-on experience of the SBB diesel locomotives equipped with particle filters and to have a concrete approach of the possible difficulties to install these filters in the existing fleet.
During the afternoon, different technical presentations were made by manufacturers of filters, as well as operators of locomotives equipped with filters.

The conclusion of the Workshop was that particle filters for diesel locomotives are an available technology, but remain costly in terms of investment and maintenance. SBB has equipped their whole diesel locomotive fleet (mainly shunter) with particle filters.

All presentations of the Workshop on particle filters are now available on the UIC website : http://www.uic.org/spip.php?article1868.
