With a view to re-establishing comprehensive agreements with major international institutions, UIC has renewed contact with UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) and its Transport Director Ms Eva Molnar. This renewed contact has been most fruitful, as the subjects addressed by the UNECE Transport Department are particularly numerous (level crossings, environment, economic studies, corridors, high speed power cars, etc.).
UNECE wishes to work with UIC on many of these subjects and has been particularly appreciative of the heightened cooperation since the summer.
A Memorandum of Understanding covering a broad range of subjects is being prepared, its official conclusion due in 2010.
Similar contact is envisaged with UNESCAP in Bangkok for the Asia and Pacific region, as well as with the African delegation in Tunis, with the same aims and concerning regional issues which require further examination.
Likewise, renewed discussions have taken place with major international institutions, in particular the World Bank in Washington and the Asian and African development banks, to whom UIC’s experience and objective expert advice can be of great use in their increasing support of the development of rail projects around the world.
