On the 10 May 2010, after previously contacting the UIC Security Division, the US Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) once again visited the UIC headquarters in Paris. The group was shown presentations on the role of the UIC as well as various rail priorities.

Paul Véron, UIC Communications Director welcomed the group on behalf of Jean-Pierre Loubinoux, UIC Director General, and then explained the new organisation and described the key issues in rail transport.
Naoto Yanase, UIC Passengers Department, presented the global development of high speed systems around the world, showing the main advantages of high speed rail services.

Gustav Manding, UIC Freight Department, focused his presentation on comparing the evolution of European rail freight with US rail freight activities.
Marie Hélène Bonneau, UIC Security Division, presented the European research project “ProtectRail” which should begin in the following weeks. As part of the project, UIC is responsible for the dissemination of information to its members and partners.

Ludovic Maréchal explained the position of the French governmental transport authorities, paying particular attention to the example of the experimental station in Paris, which is dedicated to testing procedures and devices for the prevention of terrorist attacks.

Finally Henning Schwartz, UIC Sustainable Development Division, gave a presentation entitled “Rail as the backbone of sustainable transport systems”.
All the presentations gave rise to questions from the participants who were very interested in these topics. They warmly thanked UIC for the organisation of the visit and requested another visit for next year.
