On 23 – 25 June 2010, the Rail System Department organised the 3rd edition of the UIC ERTMS Training Programme, bringing together 50 participants from railway organisations, the railway supply industry, national safety agencies and academics from all over Europe.

The training programme aimed to give a complete overview of ERTMS in all its constituent parts (ETCS, GSM-R) and in traffic management. It also extended to strategy and future developments through the sessions “Contribution of ERTMS to a sustainable transport system” and “ERTMS roll out and future developments.”

A series of theory lectures, given by Pr Peter Winter, alternated with practical cases and “best practice” presented for the first time by the participants themselves. This allowed them to interact more with each other and with the speakers.

Several speakers among the international experts in the field of ERTMS as well as the airline business (such as a presentation by Frequentis called “Traffic management: are air and rail so different?”) gave interesting points of view, allowing participants to gain a broader insight into their own business.

Finally, this session was also a good occasion to network at international level for both participants and speakers.
