The UIC Declaration on Sustainable Mobility & Transport represents a sought after tool to promote and report on UIC members contribution to sustainable mobility and transport towards key stakeholders on sustainable development and greening of transport, such as the United Nations. It also provides a solid basis for development of cooperation and partnerships with leading sustainable mobility networks and research institutes.

UIC plans to communicate and promote the UIC Declaration Sustainable Mobility and Transport with dedicated press, media, and website communication as well as on conferences in 2010 and 2011, on among others the following events:

  • COP 16 Cancun (Mexico) December 2010
  • UN Commission for Sustainable Development New York May 2011
  • International Transport Forum Leipzig May 2011
  • COP 17 South Africa December 2011
  • Rio 20+ (organised by UN Commission for Sustainable Development) in Rio de Janeiro May 2012

A high level event to promote rail’s role for sustainable development, decarbonising transport and ‘Green Economy’ is planned for the meeting of the UN Commission for Sustainable Development in May 2011. UIC is in contact with the United Nations to develop the concept for this event.

In spring 2012 the first UIC Sustainability Report is planned to be published with a selection of good practice examples according to the declaration and reporting guideline. This will be for both the Rio 20+ conference and the 12th UIC Sustainability Conference. From then on it is planned to publish a UIC Sustainability Report bi-annually.
