After having been supported by the UIC General Assembly in June this year and a following feedback process, the UIC Declaration on Sustainable Mobility & Transport is now ready to be signed.
The first UIC member signing the UIC Declaration on Sustainable Mobility & Transport was SBB. The CEO of SBB, Mr. Andreas Meyer, signed the Declaration on 21st October in Bern, Switzerland.
SBB won the 2nd UIC Sustainability Awards with its Sustainability Strategy at the 11th UIC Sustainability Conference in Madrid in June. The international independent jury with members from among others the United Nations, declared that with this strategy, approved by its Board, “SBB has made a measurable sustainability concept – including all three dimensions of sustainable development – as the basis for strategic development of the organisation.”
All UIC members are now warmly encouraged to sign the UIC Declaration on Sustainable Mobility & Transport! These days members have received detailed information on the signing process.
About the UIC Declaration on Sustainable Mobility & Transport
The UIC Declaration on Sustainable Mobility & Transport provides UIC members with a credible tool for external communication towards key stakeholders in order to present UIC members as responsible, forward-looking and innovative business leaders – as well as a tool for internal awareness raising and for continuous improvements of the rail sectors’ sustainability performance. The Declaration is supported by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Global Compact and is in line with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
The UIC Declaration on Sustainable Mobility & Transport is supported by a Reporting Guideline. Each member is encouraged to use the Declaration and the Reporting Guideline to define its key focus areas and priority issues in accordance with its individual sustainability strategies and action plans. The Reporting Guideline has been discussed on an external stakeholder hearing in October and is now going through a re-view process in cooperation with among others the GRI. The document is expected finalised by the end of 2010.
The UIC Declaration on Sustainable Mobility & Transport contains 18 messages on railway’s contribution to sustainable mobility and transport. The messages are targeting society, customers and the rail sector itself. The UIC Reporting Guideline on Sustainable Mobility & Transport will provide explanation and support to each statement. Both documents have been developed within the framework of the UIC Environment, Energy & Sustainability (EES) Platform and are the results of the UIC Sustainability indicators project.
