The 7th December marked the culmination and end of the celebration ceremonies of the 175 year anniversary of railways in Germany, with an official event held in Schauspielhaus, Nuremberg. Exactly 175 years after the “Adler” locomotive was first operated on the line between Nuremberg and Fürth on 7th December 1835, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave an official speech to a large number of guests representing the economy, politics, culture and the media.

All successive speakers underlined the essential role played by railways to support the country’s economic and social development. Dr. Rüdiger Grube, Chairman of the Board of Management of DB AG, warmly thanked all those who contributed to developing the railways either with their brain or with their hands. He added that “in future only the railways will be able to solve the dilemma between mobility and climate preservation”.
