Switzerland: Test train with roll compensation increases comfort and speed thanks to new technology

SBB is testing a new roll compensation technology that will maximise comfort and speed for passengers. Thanks to this system, the new double-deck inter-city trains on order will be able to increase their speed in curves without affecting passenger comfort. The tests carried out by the test train illustrate the system’s smooth performance, with positive reactions from passengers on the trial run.

Together with rail manufacturer Bombardier, SBB has developed a new technology with roll compensation (WAKO – Wankkompensation, which is German for “rolling compensation”). The system will enable reductions in travel time of 10% compared to standard trains, without compromising on passenger comfort. WAKO technology reduces the tilt experienced by the carbody, thereby reducing the centrifugal force felt by passengers
