On 14 October in St. Petersburg, Russian Railways President Vladimir Yakunin and the General Director of Railways of the Slovak Republic (ZSR), Vladimir Luptak, signed a memorandum of cooperation.

The memorandum will facilitate the development and modernisation of Slovakia’s transport infrastructure. It also establishes mutual cooperation on the basis of specific agreements, memoranda, and specific integration projects. These are part of a plan to integrate the railway networks of the Russian Federation and the Slovak Republic into the European and Eurasian transport systems.

The two parties confirmed an agreement on the prolongation of joint efforts between the two national railway networks to construct a wide-gauge 1520 mm line to Bratislava and Vienna, and create an international logistics centre.

In addition, the parties have agreed to ensure the provision of efficient transport services that will be based on mutual benefit and the long-term interests of the Russian Federation and the Slovak Republic.
