The Managing Director of Iran Railways Abdolali Saheb Mohammadi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Yakunin have reached a mutual agreement to establish a railway connecting the Persian Gulf to Europe, reports the ITAR-TASS news agency.

The news was announced last Saturday by Iranian news agency IRNA, following talks held between the two companies’ delegations in Moscow.

According to IRNA, the meeting was held on the sidelines of the second Russian Railway Conference, in which Vladimir Yakunin had invited Abdolali Saheb Mohammadi to take part. The two sides underlined the need to link Bandar Abbas (on the mouth of the Persian Gulf) to Europe via Russia. They described the decision as a valuable step towards completing the North-South corridor and in fostering relations between Tehran and Moscow. This corridor is set to link the countries in south-east Asia and the Persian Gulf to Northern Europe via the Caspian Region.
