Deutsche Bahn suffered considerable losses from metal theft in 2011. The number of offences recorded rose from 2000 to 3000 – an average annual growth of 50%. During the first half of 2011, the rise in the number of thefts was particular marked. In February for example, there was a 200% increase in the number of thefts compared to the same period in 2010.

However, it is important to note that there has been a reversal in the trend. As Gerd Becht, member of DB’s board of directors – and qualified to comment on the company’s security issues – highlighted, “Our new security concept is taking effect. The number of offences has fallen sharply since the summer following the introduction of new technologies and more patrols on the network.”

In 2011, the increase in metal theft affected 11,000 trains and caused 150,000 minutes of delays to rail passengers.
