As part of an international project between Russian Railways and the Ministry of Railways of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), the reconstruction of the railway infrastructure between Khasan in the Russian Federation and Rajin in the DPRK is continuing.

JSC RZDstroy, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, has completed construction work in North Korea on the permanent way of stations and rail line stretches. Russian construction workers have completed the plans to straighten track, cut ditches and drains, install culvert trays and build crossings. The Acceptance Committee of the joint Russian-Korean company RasonKonTrans has accepted 30 objects – 18 bridges and 12 culverts.

Work continues in North Korea on the reconstruction of the Unra, Unsan and Manpho tunnels, which are due to be completed in 2012. Currently, builders have started to implement the second part of the project to develop the container terminal at the port of Rajin, which envisages a wide range of works, including drainage, the construction of manufacturing and service buildings and utilities and the laying of railway lines etc.

After the reconstruction of the Khasan–Rajin railway line and the construction of the cargo terminal at the port of Rajin, the international project between Russian Railways and North Korea’s Ministry of Railways will provide transit freight with access to Russia’s rail network. The parties see the modernisation of the infrastructure on the Khasan–Rajin line as part of the reconstruction of the entire Trans-Korean Main Line.
