Deutsche Bahn is entering a new ecological era by offering a special service from 1 April 2013 to all its regular customers and frequent travellers. As of this date, the five million “Bahncard” and temporary “Zeitkarten” holders will be able to travel at no additional cost on DB’s ICE, Intercity and Eurocity trains, run on 100% renewable electricity. DB is also offering its corporate customers (bahn.corporate) CO2-free business travel, thus tripling its share of renewable energy in long-distance passenger traffic.
Dr Peter Ramsauer, Federal Minister of Transport, stated that “he supported the path taken by DB to completely switch over to renewable energy sources. In taking the lead, railways are making a significant contribution to the switch to green energy.”
For his part, DB’s CEO Dr Rüdiger Grube stated that “it is a real step forward in our approach as pioneer in the environmental field and in maintaining our lead on other modes of transport. This decision will enable us to not only significantly help preserve the environment, but will offer our most loyal customers real added value, whilst covering the cost ourselves.”
