Germany: DB Systemtechnik becomes an independent railway undertaking

DB Systemtechnik GmbH has become an independent railway undertaking after being issued a safety certificate by the German rail authority Eisenbahn-Bundesamt (EBA). The certificate will authorise the company to operate rail services in Germany.

DB Systemtechnik’s activity mainly consists of performing test runs, test campaigns and measurements on its clients’ rolling stock and on its own measuring vehicles.
Until now, these test trials have been performed under the responsibility of DB in its capacity as rail operator; however DB Systemtechnik will now be able to offer these services independently.
DB Systemtechnik also has its own testing vehicles such as the ICE S and the VT 612 to carry out regular track inspections on behalf of DB Netz AG. The company also conducts inspections on new and upgraded rolling stock for its approval on behalf of manufacturers and railway operators.

As Hans Peter Lang, Executive Director of DB Systemtechnik, points out, “the independent railway undertaking will be able to provide a more flexible and complete package, being responsible for the whole process from test trials to implementation.”
