The meeting was organised by Intader with some of the RESTRAIL partners: TCDD team who will organise the pilot field tests in Turkey, UIC as coordinator of the project, IFSTTAR as leader for the task on the selection of measures, and VTT as leader of the task on pilot test implementation.

9 risky areas along the DENİZLİ - AYDIN - TORBALI railway line were initially identified by the TCDD team.

After visiting all these areas, the working group selected 3 hotspots:

First hotspot: Güzelköy – Beşeylül: this place is particularly risky due to the presence of a primary school, residential building, coffee shop, bakery at approximately 5 metres from the railway gauge.

Proposed measures:

  • Fences
  • Education leaflets (to be distributed in the surrounding shops)

Second hotspot: Aydın Station: this is quite a crowded place close to a hospital. People use the track as a shortcut between the station and the level crossing

Proposed measures: new design between the station and the level crossing

  • Fences along the track and closing door at the station
  • Communication leaflets
  • Staff explaining and directing people the right way

Third hotspot: Aydın - İncirliova

The tracks separate the residential area and the shopping centre. There are existing fences which are regularly broken to make a shortcut.

Proposed measures:

  • Education campaign

Next step is to define the implementation plans and set up the test sites. Having put the measures in place, a detailed evaluation will be performed by comparing the pre and post-study situation evaluation in order to demonstrate that the implemented measures are effective and feasible. Apart from the evaluation of the results obtained, some recommendations and guidelines will be identified for the future application of evaluated measures drawing on the insight gained during the implementation of these pilot tests.

This two-day meeting was very successful thanks to the involvement of TCDD and INTADER.

A public conference will be organised on 12 June 2013 in Paris at UIC headquarters to give a comprehensive overview of the RESTRAIL results. All interested parties are welcome to this mid-term event and can register online at
