26 March 2013: the first high speed Frecciarossa 1000 train capable of travelling at 360 km/h (top speed 400 km/h) has left AnsaldoBreda’s Pistoia factory to begin testing. A tribute to Pietro Mennea, Italy’s fastest ever athlete, the train will continue to spread Mennea’s fame throughout Italy and Europe.

The “super-train” now begins its test programme required for certification. By 2014 it will be ready to run on high speed lines with its first passengers on board. Following the worldwide preview of the mock-up held at the Rimini Meeting last August, and after being showcased at the Innotrans International Trade Fair in Berlin, in Milan’s Piazza del Duomo, on Lungomare Caracciolo in Naples and Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, the “train of the future – manufactured by AnsaldoBreda and Bombardier – forges ahead and leaves the factory to take its rightful place as the king of Italy’s high speed rail transport system.

The event was attended by CEO of FS Group Mauro Moretti and CEO of Finmeccanica Alessandro Pansa, together with Maurizio Manfellotto and Roberto Tazzioli, respectively the CEOs of the manufacturers AnsaldoBreda and Bombardier, in addition to the President of Bertone, Mrs Lilli Bertone.

Within the next few years, Frecciarossa 1000 is set to become a major player in the revolutionary world of high speed rail transport, both in Italy and Europe. Some 50 trains have been commissioned by Trenitalia to AnsaldoBreda and Borbardier, for a total investment amounting to about EUR 1.5 billion.
