UIC held the 8th Railway Noise Workshop in Paris today, 11 June. This event continues a long UIC tradition of promoting silent railways through effective noise management in context with sustainable development.
Over 100 participants registered for the event, underlining the ongoing importance of this topic.

With the successful conclusion of the EuropeTrain project, 2013 is a particularly important year. UIC is proud to foster the development of new noise control technology but also recognises the remaining regulatory, political and financial challenges.
To explore these issues the workshop started with a session on EU policy, with presentations by the European Commission (DG ENV & DG MOVE), ERA and CER.

This was followed by a session dedicated to freight noise reduction, with presentations by the key stakeholders including: EuropeTrain, manufacturers of LL-blocks (Becorit), wagon keepers (AAE), and representatives of national governments (Germany and Switzerland).

The afternoon sessions looked at other technical developments for the control of railway noise. These included projects sponsored by the UIC Noise Expert Network, RIVAS and non-UIC projects (HS2, CargoVibes, STARDAMP, ACOUTRAIN).

Presentations will be published on the UIC website shortly.
