The Malaysian Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is the main body responsible for public transport matters in Malaysia and is directly responsible for streamlining policies, planning and regulating the rail sector in Malaysia.

As a relatively young organisation, barely four years old, SPAD decided to join UIC in order to take advantage of its wealth of information and expertise. In developing policies, SPAD seeks to reach out to other rail authorities worldwide and to be able to leverage its experience, including when formulating and setting standards for the Malaysian rail industry. In addition to this, SPAD is also keen to better understand international guidelines and processes for it to better manage and regulate the Malaysian rail industry.

SPAD has also set up an SPAD Academy to fill the existing skills and knowledge gaps within the domestic rail industry and is eager to leverage UIC to better advance human capital development given Malaysia’s ambitions targets to not only increase Malaysian track lines to more than 2,300 km by 2020, but also to support the roll-out of a domestic high speed rail industry which will link Kuala Lumpur with Singapore.

Technology development in urban rail, as well as special technologies for High Speed Rail, remains a priority area for SPAD as well.

MALAYSIA
