Italy: Ing. Michele Elia succeeds Mauro Moretti as the new CEO of Italian Railways (FS Italiane )

The Board of Management of Italian State Railways FSi, chaired by Professor Marcello Messori, unanimously appointed Ing. Michele Elia as the new Amministratore Delegato (CEO) of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane to succeed Ing. Mauro Moretti who was appointed CEO of the Italian industry group Finmeccanica. Mr Elia took up his new responsibilities on 30 May. The FSi Board of Management thanked the outgoing CEO Mr Moretti for his outstanding achievements and important results at the head of the State railway company.

Ing. Michele Elia, who holds a degree in Electro-Technical Engineering, is a licensed engineer by the Board of Italian Professional Engineers. He began his career at FS in 1975 as an Electrical Systems and Plant Inspector and from there his work included carrying out surveys of operations and maintenance of signalling, electric traction, lighting and electromotive systems and plants in the Bari Infrastructure Regional Offices. Among other tasks, he was responsible for the technical undertaking of the Rome-Naples high speed line as Head of Technical Direction of RFI from 1998 – 2006.

Chief Executive Officer of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) – the infrastructure branch of Italian Railways (FS Italiane) – since 2006, Michele Elia has held a number of high-level responsibilities within UIC’s international railway cooperation system, successively as the UIC ERTMS Platform Chairman and until now as Chairman of the UIC Rail System Forum. He is also Chairman of Corridor D EEIG, Member of LTF (Lyon Turin Ferroviarie) SAS Management Board, Member of ERA Administrative Board.

UIC, its management and Headquarters staff are particularly happy to congratulate Ing. Michele Elia on his appointment as the new FSi CEO and to welcome him in the international community of members at the next UIC Executive Board and General Assembly meetings planned from 26 – 27 June in Portoroz, Slovenia.

UIC management and Headquarters staff also express sincere gratitude and most sincere thanks to Mauro Moretti for his particularly strong commitment for many years in UIC, in particular as UIC Vice Chairman and Chairman of the UIC Regional Assembly for Europe (RAE).
