Belgium: Opening of the new Railway Operations Centre

The Railway Operations Centre is the new operational control centre from where Infrabel and SNCB monitor rail traffic in Belgium. As of this summer, Infrabel’s “Traffic Control” centre and Passenger Dispatching are now housed in one common platform. The aim: direct communication, quick and efficient handling of incidents and, as a result, more punctual trains.

Traffic Control

Infrabel’s Traffic Control centre monitors the punctuality of rail traffic. In the event of incidents and delays, our staff ensure that rail traffic returns to normal as quickly as possible. They are in contact with the signal boxes, which regulate rail traffic at local level.

SNCB Passenger Dispatching specifically handles passenger trains. They monitor the presence of train crew (driver, attendants) and equipment. Passenger information is also sent from Dispatching.

More efficient together

This summer, Infrabel’s Traffic Control Centre and SNCB’s Passenger Dispatching have been brought together under one roof in the new Railway Operations Centre. Infrabel and SNCB employees are now working face to face. Direct and efficient communication can only benefit incident handling. And therefore improve punctuality.

An ultra-modern control centre

The Railway Operations Centre is an ultra-modern control centre. With an area of 540 m² and no fewer than 55 employees, the Railway Operations Centre is on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The construction of the control room took 8 months to complete, and came in at a cost of EUR 1.5 million.
