The training session dedicated to RAMS and LCC for railway infrastructure successfully took place in Istanbul from 14 – 16 October 2014.
The training was organised in the frame of MERTCe (UIC Middle East Railway Training Centres), TCDD in cooperation with SESRIC (Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries).
The training, which was primarily designed for the Middle-East region, was attended by eleven nationalities from the Middle-East, Europe, Africa and Asia.
The main objective of the training was to increase knowledge of experts and managers on RAMS & LCC methodology. The training course was devoted to the understanding of different approaches of RAMS & LCC methodology and their advantages in a strategic decision-making process with restricted use of resources in technical development processes.
The topic was quite new for the audience and all sessions included a time slot for questions, which were quite numerous and fostered fruitful and lively exchanges.
While RAMS and LCC are often used in other businesses, it is rarely the case for railway infrastructure. Investment decisions in long-lasting components, modules or systems are often made on the basis of existing technical knowledge and restricted budgets. The most important view is therefore the first investment. But this kind of decision-making does not take into account future costs such as maintenance or re-investment and future demands.
LCC together with RAMS is the best basis for decision-making because it takes into account the technical performance and the whole-life cost of an asset.
