UIC represented the railway transport sector at the 9th International Conference on Critical Information Infrastructure Security held in Cyprus from 13 – 15 October 2014. The conference, organised in conjunction with the progress meetings of the European CIPRNet project in which the Security Division is a partner, provided a forum for sharing experience and research on strengthening the protection of various critical infrastructure and on improving system resilience.

The session dedicated to the theme “A comprehensive approach for security assessment in transport” reflected the approach developed by the UIC Security Division towards the concept of “comprehensive protection aligning policies of security, safety, and preventing and combating natural risks, with the aim of developing resilient railway transport in the event of an incident or crisis.”

The agenda also covered the aspects of cybercrime. The 2015 conference will be held from 5 – 7 October next year and the 2016 conference will be organised by UIC in Paris.

Within the European CIPRNet project, the role of the UIC Security Division is to be an end-user in the railway infrastructure sector. In addition, UIC will actively contribute to dissemination activities between its members, within CIPRNet and beyond. UIC will also add end-user perspectives from the railway transport domain to the joint research activities and defining realistic scenarios. UIC will host one of the CIPRNet workshops with end-users.

The plenary session served as an opportunity to review the status of the project (coordinated by Fraunhofer Germany: Mr Erich Rome), which was launched on 1 March 2013 for a duration of four years.
