Successful inauguration journey to Vienna Airport: on 12 December, ÖBB inaugurated the route from Vienna Central Train Station to Vienna Airport, operating an ÖBB railjet with its iconic red-white-red exterior. The scheduled time for this route – which includes the new 2.1 kilometre connecting route with the two highly noticeable network arched bridges – is 17 minutes. The train station at Vienna Airport was modernised, equipped with barrier-free access, and the platforms were extended to a length of 420 metres to make them suitable for long-distance trains.
From 14 December onwards, 11 ICE trains will be running between Wels, Linz, St. Pölten, Vienna Meidling, Vienna Central Train Station and Vienna Airport daily. In addition to this, four trains departing from Linz will be operating on the same route, so that a total of 15 trains will be operating between Linz and Vienna Airport at two-hour intervals. The travel time from the central train station in Linz to the terminals of the Vienna airport is one hour and 47 minutes. From the central train station in St. Pölten, the journey takes a mere 50 minutes. With this new direct connection, passengers on the Western line receive a pleasant, comfortable and stress-free mobility service for their journey to the airport and back home or to the office. Passengers from Salzburg can also make use of this service: they can take the InterCity (IC) to St. Pölten and there make a (perfectly timed) transfer to the ICE to Vienna Airport. railjet passengers from Wiener Neustadt and Graz are offered a comfortable connection to the ICE running from Vienna Central Train Station to Vienna Airport every two hours.

High-quality service to Vienna Airport established
With the introduction of the new long-distance time table on 14 December, passengers will now have three options of reaching the airport by rail: with the ÖBB long-distance trains or, as has been the case all along, with the rapid transit train S7 and the CAT. The differences between the three offerings relate to the level of comfort, the travel times, the regional catchment area, the passenger services (such as baggage check-in at the train station) and the fares. With the extension of the service, ÖBB wants to convince even more air passengers to opt for environmentally-friendly railway travel.
From December 2015 onwards: to the airport twice an hour with railjets and ICs
In a second phase, beginning in December of 2015, the new long-distance service to Vienna Airport will be extended even further. From this time onwards, ÖBB railjets and ICs coming from the West will be running to Vienna Airport via Vienna Meidling and Vienna Central Train Station twice an hour. ÖBB will thus be connecting four state capitals directly with Vienna Airport: Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz and St. Pölten. The travel time between Linz and Vienna will be shortened by another five minutes to one hour and 42 minutes. Vienna Airport will also be moving closer to Salzburg (travel time: 2h 49 min) and Innsbruck (4h 35 min). ICs will be running at hourly intervals from Attnang-Puchheim, Vöcklabruck, Wels, St. Valentin, Amstetten and Tullnerfeld.
